PART ONE
KATHRYN
I nuzzled my head further into Danger’s muscular chest. His strong arms clung to me and I snuck a glance up at his handsome face, he was in a peaceful slumber completely unaware that I was busy admiring how sexy he was. His chest pounded up and down next to me, taking my head with it. I had never been that close to him before and I was overwhelmed at how smooth and flawless his skin was, even up close.
I was overwhelmed by what we had just done.
It amazed me that I had gotten my way when it came to Danger; it was a rare occurrence. A rare thing that he would put his pride aside and actually give me what I wanted. God forbid one of the famous Ford brothers put their ego aside for two seconds.
I just had sex with my stepbrother. I just had sex with my stepbrother. The thought kept playing over and over in my mind. It was there so much that I couldn’t even sleep because I was too busy thinking about it. My first time had been everything I had wanted it to be and it had been with the one person I wanted to be with more than anyone else in the world.
Damn, I felt like the luckiest girl in the entire city right now.
It had been everything I thought it would be with Danger. He was perfect, making me comfortable and going slow until I was ready. I knew he thought us hooking up was a bad idea but I didn’t really care, this was probably the first time in a long time I had gotten my way with him.
Danger was way too stubborn to compromise on much in his life, even for me. That was why I kept telling myself that somewhere deep down inside of him he must have wanted this as much as I did.
I heard his phone ringing somewhere in the distance and he started to stir underneath me. I snapped my eyes shut, not wanting him to know I had been awake this whole time obsessing about what we had just done.
Danger moved my body gently off him and got up, grabbing his phone from the dresser. I peeked my eyes open and snuck a quick look. He was all sleepy and raspy from just waking up. So fucking hot.
I forced myself to snap my eyes shut again.
“What’s good?” Danger said into the phone, I could hear him clearing his throat, trying to wake up. There was a pause and I could hear a male talking loudly on the other end. I couldn’t be positive but I was pretty sure it sounded like Link and judging from how loud he was talking he was pretty worked up.
“Lacey who?” Danger sounded confused now like he had no idea what the fuck Link was talking about. I heard more yelling and explanation on the other end and Danger sighed. “Why the fuck would she call you?” There was a long pause and then Danger huffed loudly like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “YOU’RE WHERE?”
More screaming came from the other end of the phone. I opened my eyes half way, trying to study Danger’s expression. He looked stressed out and annoyed at the same time. He glanced at me and I snapped my eyes closed again, not wanting him to have any filter on what he said to Link.
“Okay, just relax. I’m about to be on my way.” His voice was lower now like he just remembered I was sleeping a few inches away from him. “I’m not whispering,” he said, sounding annoyed again. “I’ll see you soon and I’ll stop and get Trigger on the way.” He hit the end button on his phone and sighed loudly.
And that was my cue.
I started to stir softly like I was just waking up. I squinted into the light of the room, pretending to be all disheveled and out of it from my lack of sleep. “Danger?” I asked in a whisper.
His eyes were on mine, studying me. “Hey,” he said softly, walking over to the bed and sitting his perfect body on the edge of it to look down at me. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“It’s okay. Is everything okay?” I asked him slowly.
Suspicion flashed in his eyes. “Yeah. Why do you ask?” He was searching me, trying to read my eyes and figure out if I heard something I wasn’t supposed to.
“Because you’re up in the middle of the night pacing back and forth.” I laughed like it should have been obvious why I was asking.
His smooth face relaxed a little bit. “Oh, right. Well, everything is fine but I gotta take off for a little while. My bad, I know the timing isn’t ideal.”
“Where are you going?” I asked casually like I could have cared less about the answer. I was testing him, trying to figure out if he was going to lie to me or not.
“Just out,” Danger said, getting up from the bed and starting to get dressed.
“Out with who?” I pushed.
Danger shrugged. “My brothers.” He wasn’t really lying but he wasn’t telling me the entire story either. From the way I had heard Link yelling and the part of the conversation I got from Danger’s end of the phone let me know it was a little more than just a random hang out session between the Ford brothers. It sounded intense and panicked, like something big was going on.
“Oh, great.” I shot up in bed and started to brush my fingers through my hair. “I would love to see them.”
“No!” Danger snapped and then he backtracked when he saw my face. “It’s more of a guy thing, no offense. I’m sure it won’t be too long. Stay here and I’ll be back in a little while, alright?”
I shrugged like I didn’t suspect anything. “Okay.”
“Good.” Danger grabbed a pair of tan boots off the floor and slipped them on his feet and then looked at me, hesitating. After a few seconds, he walked over to the bed and leaned down, giving me a kiss on the top of my head. “See you soon.”
And then he was gone, leaving me alone in bed.
I felt annoyed, like Danger had lied straight to my face even though he really hadn’t. He was treating me like more of an adult when it came to certain aspects but overall he was still shielding me from things, still acting like I couldn’t handle his truth. I was sick of it, sick of being so close to the Ford brothers but still being in the dark about what they did on a day-to-day basis.
It was fucked up. Who could you trust if you couldn’t trust your family?
I shot up from bed and threw on a pair of yoga pants and a red zip-up. Then I slipped a pair of sneakers on my feet and grabbed a set of Danger’s keys off my dresser. If Danger wasn’t going to tell me what the hell he was up to I was just going to have to figure it out for myself.
Danger drove his bike the way an absolute asshole would, zooming in and out of streets like he was on the run from the cops. I sighed, glad that Trigger had taught me how to keep up with bitch ass drivers a long time ago. He took me out one Sunday when he had been drinking and taught me the basics. He said it was a special class that he taught and I was his first student. He called it “how to drive like a biker 101.”
It sounded silly at first but it had actually turned out to be pretty fun, the two of us speeding down dark side streets at night; trying to figure out different back roads and alleys to take to get somewhere faster or unseen. I had to admit my stepbrothers could be pretty cool sometimes; when they weren’t driving me completely insane, that is.
Danger pulled his bright red bike into the driveway of Trigger’s townhouse. Not surprising since I heard him tell Link he was goi
ng to be picking him up on the way. The part that was surprising was how fast Danger was off his bike, barely having time to cut the engine before he was dodging off and running up to the front door.
He started slamming on Trigger’s door as hard as he could.
I cut my engine and hit the lights off, careful to stay hidden across the street so that no one could see me. I was pretty sure Danger would flip the fuck out if he knew I followed him, along with my other two stepbrothers. They already thought I was too nosey.
Danger kept pounding and a few seconds later I could hear him starting to yell something at the still closed door. Finally, the door swings open and Trigger stood in the doorway, looking confused and shocked to see his brother banging on his door in the middle of the night. Danger didn’t wait for Trigger to say anything, pushing past him and slamming the door shut behind them instead.
This sure as hell didn’t look like just a night out with the boys to me.
Nice try, Danger.
A few minutes later they both came dodging out of the house like madmen. Jumping into Trigger’s car and peeling out of the driveway so fast that the tires screeched on the pavement, causing a loud noise to ring in and out of my ears. What the fuck? You would think someone was dead the way they were racing around like absolute crazies in the middle of night.
I turned my lights on and took off after them, trying to stay a safe distance away from them so I didn’t give myself away. But it was hard since they were going so fucking fast. Not to mention I knew Danger was always pretty observant about cars watching him, always checking his mirrors and the cars around him. He never went into it but I assumed he was paranoid about the cops or an enemy tailing him.
Or in this case: his stepsister.
I managed to keep the pace and he eventually came to a stop on a side street, he and Trigger jumped out of the car and jogged a block or two down. My eyes traveled up the road to the restaurant. They were going to the restaurant? Why would they go there in the middle of the night?
It hardly seemed like the destination of anything exciting, just the opposite actually. The restaurant was owned by all the brothers; a legit way to get in money without causing any suspicion. They usually tried to keep anything sketchy from going down there. The last thing they wanted was for it to be searched or for feds to start poking their heads around.
I parked a few buildings down and got out of the car. It was freezing out, and I cursed myself for not putting a jacket on. I hugged my arms to my chest and moved toward the restaurant, desperate to know what the hell was going on. The front of the entrance was black, showing no sign of life anywhere inside. I peeked my head inside and saw the glow of a light on in the back of the restaurant: it looked like it was coming from the kitchen.
I went around to the back of the building slowly, scared I would run into one of my stepbrothers at any minute. I felt like I was a criminal or something, on the run from the cops, and one wrong move could get me caught and thrown in jail for the rest of my life.
I reached the back door of the restaurant and froze, not sure what to do next. I couldn’t go inside of the back door: they were probably all right in the kitchen. I could press my ear against the door and try to listen to what was going on inside but what if someone else came? Or what if they opened the door and smacked me in the face? It was too risky, too easy to blow my cover.
I was trying to regroup when I heard the sound of feet on the pavement coming from around the building. Fuck, someone was coming. I turned around and jolted a few feet behind the huge dumpster that was in the back of the restaurant.
Ugh, it smelled like absolute shit back here.
I plugged my nose then inched closer to the edge of the container, peeking out around the corner to see who was coming late to the party. Nothing happened for a few seconds and then a shadow emerged from the dark, walking rapidly with his head faced toward the ground.
It was Silk.
And he was carrying a huge black bag.
He pounded on the back door of the restaurant and a few seconds later Danger and Trigger emerged, letting the door slam shut behind them. Silk didn’t say a word, dropping the huge bag on the ground with a loud thud instead. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a few cigs, handing them to my two stepbrothers.
“Here,” he said. “I think you two could use these tonight.”
Danger took one and lit it up, inhaling deeply.
Ew, I knew who I wouldn’t be kissing later on.
None of them said anything for a few beats; letting whatever situation they were dealing with sink in and process.
Silk finally spoke. “How’s the girl?”
Trigger ran his hands over his temple, stress consuming his handsome face. “She seems okay, kind of shaken up. She’s talking crazy, she’s convinced Jay had something to do with it.”
Danger laughed; like he couldn’t believe the crazy shit people came up with in their own delusional minds. “The bitch is crazy and she better watch her mouth before she brings one of our brothers into it.”
Silk looked unsure, though, even to me who was feet and feet away from him. “No one recognizes the guy?”
Danger shook his head. “Never seen him.”
“Me either,” Trigger added.
“Will she keep her mouth shut?” Silk looked back and forth between the two of them, desperate to know just how messy this whole situation was going to get.
Danger laughed. “Who the fuck knows? Link seems to think she will but she seems kind of flakey to me. What do you think, bro?”
Trigger didn’t say anything, a lost look in his eyes.
“Trigger?”
No response again.
“TRIGGER?” Danger said, louder this time, annoyance all over his voice.
Trigger jumped back a little bit; like he was just realizing Danger and Silk were there at all. “What? Why you yelling?”
“What the fuck is up with you? You’ve been acting weird ever since I got to your crib. Lookin’ at your phone every two seconds and shit. What’s up with you? You paranoid about something?” Danger’s eyes were accusing now, mad that Trigger didn’t seem to have his head in the brotherhood when they needed him the most.
“Nothing is up with me.” Trigger rolled his eyes at his older brother; like he was used to being accused of shit that had no truth behind it. “You’re the one being paranoid. Can we just handle this shit so I can get my ass back home to bed?”
Danger stepped back and held his hands up in surrender. “Well, excuse me, King Trigger. Let’s get a move on right away! We wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of your beauty sleep.” He turned to Silk and winked. “We all know he needs it.”
They both started laughing and Trigger rolled his eyes. “Let’s just do this.” He opened the back door and all 3 of them disappeared inside, letting the door slam shut behind them and leaving me out in the cold.
What the fuck was going on? Who the fuck was Lacey and what had happened to her that she was blaming Jay for? And who was the man they didn’t recognize? This whole thing seemed way more serious than I had thought. And the more bits and pieces I got of the story the more I wanted to know the entire thing.
I stood outside for a few more minutes trying to decide what I should do. Finally, I walked back around toward the front of the building. I saw a black van parked in the front of the building that I assumed Silk must have brought. Silk didn’t drive a van; he drove an expensive looking bike just like most of the brothers in my stepbrother’s club.
So why would they need a van?
I head back to my car and move it up a few spots so I had a better view of the van and the front of the restaurant and then I waited. And waited. And waited some more. What the fuck was going on in there that it was taking them this damn long to figure it out?
I glanced at the van again and found myself yawning. It was the middle of the night and my brain kept trying to slip me into sleep mode. I glanced at the light of a 24-hour gas station that
was up and block and decide to head up there to get a coffee. I was going to need fuel if I was going to be up all night waiting on these fools.
The gas station was pretty busy for the middle of the night.
A bunch of drunk guys coming for breakfast sandwiches and skittles in the middle of the dead night after they leave the bar. I had been one of them a few times with my girls but I hadn’t been in a while, most of the time it was too annoying. Drunken ass guys had no filter and were always causing a scene everywhere they went.
I found a spot in the back of the parking lot and headed inside.
It was packed just like I knew it would be.
I didn’t recognize anyone, though. I made my way through the crowd of drunk bodies toward the coffee station and grabbed a large cup, filling it up to the top with the hot liquid. I dumped a bunch of cream and sugar into it and then grabbed a bacon egg and cheese sandwich out of the hot case, desperate to get back to my post.
I got to the register and paid without much hassle. I was all the way out the door and walked down the sidewalk when some guy stopped me. He was dark and intense looking with long hair and dead blue eyes.
“Hey!” he said, looking me up and down. “I know you!”
I tried to keep walking but he slumped in front of me, his drunken body swimming back and forth while he tried to stay standing upright. His friends were next to him; laughing at how drunk he is.
“Sure you know her, drunk ass,” one of them said and the others burst into laughter.
“No! I do! I know you!” he told me again, practically shouting now. “How do I know you? HOW DO I KNOW YOU?”
“You don’t,” I told him.
“Yes, I do! I’m not drunk! I know you!”
I went to move past him but he reached out, grabbing me by the arm. “I got it! You’re the sister! The sister! Of those brothers that go around beating everyone up! What’s their name? What’s their name?”
“The Ford Brothers.”
The voice came from behind us and we both swung around, coming face to face with Danger, and he looks absolutely pissed.
